Working in a musical theater company is a lot like being married: egos, foibles and follies on display. Three seasoned performers and longtime friends, Kristiana, Giovanni and Meryl, have swerved too far from their musical comedy comfort zone into the depths of the Greek tragedy “Medea.” Onstage, Medea’s children are in mortal danger; backstage, the mood is just as perilous. Thirty-eight shows to go. One hour to curtain. Somebody has stolen the foundation and a makeup table has gone missing. Everyone has an accusation and nobody has an alibi. Their director has had enough. Luckily, all three speak (and sing) Sondheim. When words fail, there’s a Sondheim song for that. But will it be enough to save their friendship?

After two off-Broadway revues by Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire, Jewel Box Musical Theater enters new territory with an original show: Send In The Clowns – There’s A Sondheim Song For That!

Music and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim (1930–2021), who turned the musical from spectacle into great storytelling. His songs are witty, sharp and deeply human, and once you’ve heard them, they stay with you for life. His honors include a Pulitzer Prize, an Oscar and many Tony Awards, and his shows include “Sweeney Todd,” “Into the Woods” and “A Little Night Music,” the home of “Send In The Clowns.”
